Leading with Compassion: A Quest to a Transformational Leader
The mantle of responsibility to translate vision into reality falls most heavily on the superintendents. Yet superintendents are the crucial agents, tasked with mobilizing the human, social and physical capital needed to bring about systematic change. They can do more to change the way a community thinks about itself, its children, and the future than any other position.
A mind-blowing task inspired and challenged me to feature an innovative and transformational leader yet compassionate. It was indeed a systematic quest. Ready with my checklists and numerous questions but laid onto four dimensions of a leader that nurtures innovations, a genuine transformational leader. That I hope you feel as lifted as I did listen to Dr. Lourdes D. Servito, EdD, CESO IV of San Carlos City Division. She is one of the most inspirational people I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing, in fact, so inspirational: you may just find yourself willing to run, fly and even “walk the talk” through her wisdom and passion for change, for innovation!
IDEALIZED INFLUENCE, a role model to be emulated by her followers. Dr. Servito, uses her influence to act as role-model, who influences lives in positive ways. If one truly wants to survive in the leadership position, one must pay close attention to the needs of the followers. “Lead by example, teach and guide them with a compassionate heart and with an unending passion”, she quoted. It is not simply by being proactive or taking initiative but being supportive, dependable, punctual, persistent, confident, and respectful to the team members and do everything to encourage their success.
Moreover, she demonstrates what’s possible by building relationships through coaching and mentoring bringing out the best in people. She provides and builds support and encouragement-an authentic connection that recognized people’s strengths, earned their trust and identified and pursued stretch goals. Indeed, one of her greatest assets and abilities as a leader is her ability to communicate effectively with people in a friendly way or personal effectiveness skills, that is absolutely an emotional intelligence, expressing empathy and compassion for the human side of the upheaval.
INTELLECTUAL STIMULATION, “Children are the Priority. Change is the Reality. 4C’s is the Strategy”, these 4C’s; communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity boosted her in developing a good team. Effective communication is taking place, adults working effectively on complex projects in collaborative teams, teams thinking critically to analyze and solve complex problems, and staff members generating original ideas that can be put into practice. We are very grateful in her, for conceptualizing the Modular and Electronic Learning (ModEL) as Preferred Learning Delivery Modality in our division, the Project Module Development (MODE), the Educational Media Powerhouse, and the Project “Grow a seed and live”, are just among others, that sooner we will be able to reap their glory of effectiveness!
INDIVIDUALIZED CONSIDERATION, or her genuine concern for the needs of others. I happened to ask question in dealing with abrasive people, and her answer was so striking,” Believe it or not, you can stay calm, defuse conflicts, and keep your dignity by killing the person with kindness”, meaning, do not met anger with anger instead speak generously, act graciously, meet a need and be a good listener, she added. In a certain organization, situations like these cannot be avoided, one must be an analytical thinker and try hard to reach out to their needs instead. That’s why in her short stay in SCC Division, she had shown to her followers how to build coalitions and alliances as a foundation for working together, meeting the needs of the children, the teachers and administration. She builds an ever-stronger, trust-based relationships and offers direct recognition with the SDO officials, supervisors, school heads, head teachers and non-teaching personnel and the SDO development teams of innovators and writers.
INSPIRATIONAL MOTIVATION, challenges followers to be innovative and creative. Such issue on Paradigm Shift in Learning for the New Normal, meaning everyone has to set aside traditional ways of teaching and learning, this reality has drove teachers, students and administrators a crash course in maximizing existing technologies to comply with the new policy. She wanted resilient leaders to take specific tactical steps to elevate these qualities during the current crisis, blunting its impact and helping organization emerge stronger.
Dr. Servito, looks at some actionable ways to encourage her constituents for a lifelong learning and recognize learning as achievement. She proposed numerous research agenda/topics under the “New Normal”, the development of SCC Division E-Research Hub for modules, researches, books and other learning resources, non-BERF funded researches and school innovations and a lot more to come. A spirit with a vision is a dream with mission, that is certainly an adaptive leadership mantra.
Dr. Sevito’s commitment and participatory approach to leadership is yielding tangible results. Despite these continuing opportunities for improvement, the districts have experienced some tangible improvements under her leadership. The task of creating an innovative culture includes the unleashing of creativity of colleagues which will secure the future of the institution.
On my final walked and talked to Dr. Lourdes D. Servito, she really made me believe that she is a mind blowing - TRIAL Superintendent; T-ransformational Advocate, R- ole Model, I-nnovative and Creative Practitioner, A-lways ready to improve the system’s status quo, and a L-eader with Compassion.
It takes excellent leadership to achieve coherence, to manage change and to maintain momentum and commitment to continuous improvement, but friends, ladies and gentlemen, Dr. Servito is very much empowered and energized…Onward to the New Normal!
